"How Do I Take the First Step in Martial Arts & Self Defense Training?"
By Calen Paine - Wise Warrior Gym
At the Wise Warrior we recognize that coming through the door to check out a martial arts or self-defense program can be scary or unnerving. When we let ourselves be held back by worry, our goals can be sidetracked for weeks, months, even years. What's needed to take that first step?
Confused man holding his head, How Do I Take the First Step in Martial Arts and Self Defense Training, Edmonton
Taking that first step to begin training is sometimes the hardest part. Common concerns for the inquiring individual as they come for that first visit can be:

—“I’m out of shape how will I look?"
—"Will I get hurt learning self-defense or mixed martial arts?"
—"Is the gym filled with students with big egos?"
—"Will the classes be boring?"
—"Will the class be too difficult or too strenuous?”

For all Alberta and Edmonton area inquiring students, we at Wise Warrior Gym are certain that your first visit will be a comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable experience. Whether you want to check out the REAL Self Defense, Mixed Martial Arts, Weapons classes, or Martial Arts for the Mind, every effort is made to make sure you:

—Feel comfortable from the moment you walk in the door
—Learn cool and functional stuff
—Get a great workout (at your pace & level)
—Have a blast while training
—Meet genuine, helpful people

The most important part of your martial arts training journey is simply to start. Where would you be if you never took a risk? The following poem has been posted up in my gym in the front reception area for more than a decade:

Risk
To laugh is to risk appearing the fool
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental
To reach out for another is to risk involvement
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self
To place your ideas and dreams before the crowd is to risk loss
To love is to risk not being loved in return
To love is to risk dying
To try at all is to risk failure
But we must….
Because the greatest hazard of life is to risk nothing
The man who risks nothing, does nothing, is nothing
This may avoid suffering….. but……
They simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love or live
Chained by attitudes, he is a slave, he has forfeited his freedom
Only the person who risks can be called a free man

Take a risk and come through the door. We will attend to all your concerns and training needs. You won’t regret it.
